Apartment Essentials for The First-Time Renter

November 30, 2022

A Convenient Checklist

Rental applications, security deposit, everyday living items – moving can be an exciting (and daunting) task, especially if you’re leaving your parents’ house and living on your own for the first time. We made a checklist of all the essentials you may want to think about before move-in day comes around.

You may not need every item on the day you move in, but you will find some to be essential in your day to day life. For those items that you don’t need immediately, save money by finding sales and buying them over time. A great way to start is by going to garage sales, thrift shops, Facebook Marketplace or sites like Craigslist.

Having your mattress and bedding on move-in day is essential. A bed frame is not a must – that is something you can buy later, but a mattress and bedding will help after a long day of moving. Along with the mattress, don’t forget:

      • Sheets
      • Pillows
      • Pillowcases
      • Bedspread/Comforter
      • Blankets
      • Hangers
      • Window coverings

Living Room

You want your living room to be an inviting yet functional living space. If you love to host gatherings, you want your guests to feel comfortable. One tidbit that’s good to know – a sleeper sofa or futon will give you seating options that turn into a sleeping option. As far as a checklist, here are the first things you need…

      • Coffee Table
      • Couch
      • TV Stand
      • TV
      • Side Table

Immediate must-haves:

      • Shower curtain and hooks
      • Toilet paper
      • Bath towels
      • Toiletries
      • Cleaning supplies

It’s essential to have the basics for your kitchen to feel settled as soon as you move in. You’ll probably need the following basics:

      • Plates and bowls
      • Silverware & drawer organizer
      • Glasses
      • Pots and pans
      • Baking sheet and cake pan
      • Oven mitts
      • Measuring cups and spoons
      • Aluminum foil, plastic wrap, plastic bags
      • Food storage containers
      • Colander
      • Bottle,  wine, and can openers
      • Coffee maker

Kitchen Cleaning and Extras

      • Dish soap and/or dishwasher detergent
      • Dishtowels
      • Sponges
      • Dish drainer
      • Paper towels
      • Trash can and trash bags

Laundry & Cleaning Supplies

      • Laundry basket
      • Laundry detergent
      • Fabric softener sheets
      • Stain remover
      • Cleaning products – all purpose cleaner, tub and tile cleaner, glass cleaner, etc.
      • Vacuum cleaner

Creating a checklist is a very personalized process. You may not need some of these things, so add and delete as necessary.
